The Allegheny Chamber Players will present their third annual concert at Smoke N Mirrors Gallery & Studio, 114 South 3rd Street, Oakland, MD on Sunday, March 29, 2020. The concert begins at 4:00 p.m. preceded by a reception beginning at 3:30. Tickets are $20.00, which includes 2 drink tickets (for persons age 21 and older).
The program includes pieces for a variety of instrumental combinations, including duets, trios, a quartet, and quintets by American, Austrian, British, and German composers.
Christopher Wilkinson, director of the ensemble, stated that “we welcome once again the opportunity to perform in Oakland where in the past we have played for very welcoming audiences. A new member of the ACP will make his debut: cellist Ryan Phipps. Another new member is Bohdan Schevchenko, bassoonist, a native of Ukraine. Both musicians are pursuing graduate students in musical performance at West Virginia University.
The concert will begin with a Divertimento for violin, horn and cello by Franz Josef Haydn, followed by a composition by the British composer Rebecca Clarke for clarinet and viola. To commemorate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven, his duet for viola and cello for which he required that the performers wear glasses will be the third work after which a trio for flute, clarinet, and bassoon by the Austrian composer Erich Romanovsky will conclude the first half of the program.
Three works constitute the second half of the concert beginning with American composer Courtney Bryan’s tribute to the African-American poet Gwendolyn Brooks entitled “Blooming” for woodwind quintet. British composer Malcolm Arnold’s Quartet for Oboe and Strings will be followed by an arrangement for woodwind quintet of Scott Joplin’s Gladiolus Rag.
The members of the Allegheny Chamber Players who will perform are Catherine Dowd (horn), Evan Klein (oboe), Gabrielle Padilla (viola), Ryan Phipps (cello), Stephanie Pratt (violin), Bohdan Schevchenko (bassoon), Alyssa Schwartz (flute), and Christopher Wilkinson (clarinet).
