Blackwater Mojo is a bare bones blues-rock duo from the heart of the Appalachian hill country. Well known for high energy performances, driving rhythms, and distinct sonic, this duo has no trouble filling the room in a way one would expect from a band twice their size.
Featuring a powerful and dynamic lead vocalist (Erin Young) and a slide guitarist turned one man rhythm section (Seth Young), Blackwater Mojo seamlessly interweaves the raw emotion of the delta blues with the warmth and richness of an old time string band. Not to be confused with preservationists, their unapologetic approach to American roots music makes them sound at once vintage and modern.
Seth and Erin Young have been creating music together for over ten years. The couple met in 2003 while working as house musicians for a popular theater in Cincinnati Ohio. Three years later they wed and while traveling on their honeymoon to Rapa Nui (Easter Island) they were invited by local island musicians to lead a blues jam. There, in the shadow of the monolithic Moai, with the sounds of traditional Polynesian rhythms and American blues harmonies swirling into the night and over the Pacific Ocean, Blackwater Mojo was born.
This husband and wife team has since toured the world over — from Bangkok to Belgrade, San Francisco to Santiago, audiences have been delighted and surprised by their ability to stay true to their roots while simultaneously blending and crossing genres.
2012 was a breakout year for the band. Following the release of their first album “Cold Holler,” Blackwater Mojo was selected by the West Virginia Blues Society to represent their chapter at the International Blues Competition in Memphis Tennessee.
Capitalizing on the momentum gained while performing there, the duo returned in the summer of 2013 to record a live EP at legendary Sun Studio. “Stomp and Holler! Live from Sun Studio” is due to be released in November and will feature the never before heard single “You are the Only One.”
