To kick off the 2017 trail season and celebrate Earth Day, on Saturday, April 22, from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm, the Deep Creek Lake Lions Club and Garrett Trails are partnering to sponsor a volunteer trail cleanup at the Meshach Browning Trail System located at the Lions Club park on Bumble Bee Road in Accident. Volunteers can expect to join in a variety of basic trail maintenance activities including helping to clear existing trails of winter debris, constructing connector paths between trails, and placing picnic tables and markings along the trails. Interested participants should meet in the Deep Creek Lake Lions Club Park parking lot (1263 Bumble Bee Road) by 9:00 am.
When complete, the multi-purpose trail system will have interpretive signage based on the life and times of Meshach Browning, an early 1800's settler of Garrett County and prolific hunter. Project manager and club member Chris Nichols said, "We're excited to complete this trail system to provide County residents and visitors with a centrally located option for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking." The trail is unique in its inclusion of historical signage that will inform and spark the imaginations of users of all ages. In addition, Nichols said much of the trail will be on relatively flat terrain giving its users a low intensity site to develop their trail running or mountain biking skills or just take a break from some of the more technical trails in the area. The Lions Club operates the community recreation site and dog park on Bumble Bee Road and will be using adjacent land owned by the County for the trail system. Development of the trail system is supported by a grant from the Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area to the Deep Creek Lake Lions Club.
