Join us for the unveiling of an amazing new piece of art and get engaged with filling in the gaps of local history!
The official unveiling of Annie Simcoe's newest work of art will kick off our project to show the perspective of the women settlers of what would become Garrett County. In 2018, we launched the Meshach Browning History Center and Trail System which now consists of historical panels, 7 pieces of life-size art themed around Meshach Browning, along with over 6 miles of multi-use trail. Browning was one of the earliest settlers of Garrett County and a prolific hunter, with much of his life documented in a memoir, Forty Four Years of a Hunter. His book (and our historical panels) tell the tale from his (very male) perspective, and although he clearly adores and respects his wife Mary, there are less than 4 pages about her.
We intend to round out the story with some new historical panels and art dedicated to providing the women's perspective of this time and place. Following the unveiling, we'll convene the initial meeting of a group to develop this content. There will refreshments served.
